### Lesson Plan: Printmaking Techniques for 4th Grade
**Grade Level:** 4th Grade
**Subject:** Art
**Topic:** Printmaking Techniques
**Duration:** 60 minutes
---
**Objective:**
Students will learn about and practice basic printmaking techniques, including relief printing and monoprinting. They will create their own prints using these methods.
---
### Materials Needed:
- Foam sheets or Styrofoam plates
- Printing ink (water-based)
- Brayers (rollers)
- Printing paper or construction paper
- Pencils
- Palettes or flat surfaces for rolling out ink
- Newspapers or scrap paper for table protection
- Aprons or old shirts (optional, to protect clothing)
- Wet wipes or paper towels for clean-up
---
### Standards Met:
- **National Core Arts Standards:**
- **Creating:** Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.
- **Presenting:** Analyze, interpret, and select artistic work for presentation.
- **Responding:** Interpret intent and meaning in artistic work.
- **Connecting:** Synthesize and relate knowledge and personal experiences to make art.
---
### Procedure:
**Introduction (10 minutes):**
1. **Discussion (5 minutes):**
- Introduce the topic of printmaking. Explain that printmaking is an art process that allows artists to create multiple images from a single design.
- Show examples of prints done by artists like Katsushika Hokusai or Albrecht Dürer.
- Discuss the types of printmaking: relief, intaglio, lithography, and screen printing, focusing mainly on relief and monoprinting which will be practiced today.
2. **Demonstration (5 minutes):**
- Demonstrate how to create a relief print using foam sheets/Styrofoam plates.
- Explain and show how to indent designs into the foam using a pencil, apply ink with a brayer, and transfer the print onto paper.
**Activity: Relief Printing (30 minutes):**
1. **Design Creation (10 minutes):**
- Have students sketch out a simple design on paper.
- Once designs are approved, students transfer their designs by indenting them onto foam sheets using pencils.
2. **Printing Process (20 minutes):**
- Students will roll out the ink using brayers on palettes.
- They will then apply the ink evenly to their indented foam sheets.
- Students press their inked foam sheets onto the printing paper to create their prints.
- Encourage students to make multiple prints to see variations in their work.
**Break/Clean-Up (5 minutes):**
- Allow time for students to clean up their work areas and hands.
**Activity: Monoprinting (10 minutes):**
1. **Demonstration and Execution (10 minutes):**
- Explain monoprinting, emphasizing its uniqueness.
- Demonstrate how to apply ink to a blank foam sheet or smooth surface and draw designs directly into the ink with various tools.
- Show how to transfer the monoprint onto paper by pressing and gently rubbing the back to ensure a good transfer.
**Conclusion/Critique: (10 minutes)**
- **Gallery Walk (5 minutes):**
- Have students display their artworks on tables or the wall.
- Encourage them to walk around and observe their classmates' prints.
- **Reflection (5 minutes):**
- Ask students to share what they enjoyed about the printmaking process and what challenges they faced.
- Encourage them to think about how they could use printmaking in future art projects.
---
### Assessment:
- **Participation:** Observing students during activities, ensuring they understand and actively engage in the printmaking process.
- **Finished Pieces:** Assess the prints for creativity, effort, and use of techniques discussed.
- **Reflection Participation:** Note contributions during the reflection session to gauge understanding and personal insights.
---
### Extension Activities:
- Explore more advanced printmaking techniques in future classes.
- Integrate printmaking into other subjects, such as creating printed illustrations for stories in language arts.
---
### Adaptations for Diverse Learners:
- Provide extra assistance or simplified tools for students who need it.
- Pair students for peer support during activities.
- Use visual aids and step-by-step instructions to help guide the students through the process.
---
### Notes:
- Encourage creativity and individuality in their designs.
- Remind students to handle tools and materials safely and responsibly.
This lesson aims to inspire students to experiment with textures, patterns, and imagery, fostering a deeper appreciation of the printmaking art form.
